전 세계 수학자들이 참여한 가운데 매 4년마다 열리는 ‘수학계의 올림픽’ 세계수학자대회가 오는 8월 13일부터 21일까지 서울 코엑스에서 열린다.

세계수학자대회는 수학의 노벨상이라 불리는 필즈상(Fields Medal) 시상, 학술행사, 대중강연, 패널토론 등이 열리는 수학자들의 축제로 아시아에서는 일본(1990), 중국(2002), 인도(2010)에 이어 4번째로 우리나라에서 개최된다.

미래창조과학부와 2014 서울세계수학자대회 조직위원회(이하 조직위)는 2014 서울세계수학자대회가 전 국민이 함께하는 수학 축제가 될 수 있도록 다양한 수학문화행사를 개최할 예정이라고 12일 밝혔다.

대회 기간 중 수학영화를 감상하고 필즈상 수상자와 영화 속 수학 이야기를 나누는 수학 영화 상영 이벤트가 열리며, 유창혁 9단 등 프로기사의 지도다면기가 펼쳐지는 수학과 바둑 이벤트, 터치스크린을 통해 수학적 조형물의 3차원 형상을 체험하는 ‘이매지너러(상상·IMAGINARY)’ 체험전도 개최된다.

대회 개막일인 8월 13일에는 하버드대 수학과 교수 출신의 세계적 펀드매니저 제임스 사이먼스의 대중강연이 예정돼 있으며, 20일에는 수학의 대중화에 관한 강연도 열릴 예정이다.

참여를 희망하는 사람은 대회 홈페이지(http://www.icm2014.org/kr)를 통해 사전에 신청할 수 있다. 신청기간은 7일 21일까지로 조기에 마감할 수 있어 빨리 신청하는 게 좋다.

한편 2014 한국 수학의 해를 맞아 다양한 수학문화행사들이 서울세계수학자대회 전후 집중 개최돼 수학 대중화의 수학 저변 확산의 계기가 마련될 것으로 보인다.

수학교사의 글로벌 역량 강화를 위한 수학교사 한마당이 개최되며, 학부모들의 수학교육에 대한 인식을 제고하고 궁금증을 해결해주는 ‘Ask_Math! 학부모 소통 프로젝트’도 방영된다.

또한 게임을 통해 수리·창의력을 증진할 수 있는 온라인 수학게임대회, 수학과 과학·예술·건축 등을 융합하는 국제 컨퍼런스인 ‘Bridges Seoul 2014 Conference’, 수학의 즐거움을 체험할 수 있는 수학문화축전이 국립과천과학관 주관으로 개최된다.

이외 국립어린이청소년도서관과 국립현대미술관에서 개최하는 수학특별전시, 고등과학원·인터파크·조직위 등에서 주관하는 수학대중강연 등 다양한 수학문화행사들이 개최될 예정이다.

장석영 미래부 미래인재정책국장은 “2014 서울세계수학자대회가 한국 수학이 한 단계 도약하고 국민들이 수학에 흥미를 느끼고 친숙해질 수 있는 계기가 되기를 기대한다”고 이번 대회 개최 의의를 밝혔다.
